Un-manned Aerial Vehicle Crash Site Remediation
An Un-manned Aerial Vehicle suddenly crashed into a wetlands area of the Hidden Shores Resort. The
crash occurred on Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land near swimming and fishing areas. There
were concerned residents and visitors adjacent to the area.
GCE was called and immediately responded to the site. Upon visiting the site and meeting with US Army
Yuma Proving Ground (YPG) and BLM personnel, GCE developed a plan to remove the contaminated
soil and sample the limits of the excavation. The plan was approved by YPG and BLM . Under the supervision
of GCE, the soil was excavated, characterized, and disposed. Petroleum Contaminated Soil (PCS)
was excavated down to groundwater. Within the smear zone, there were detectable concentrations of
Toluene and Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH). As a result, an in-situ bioremediation technology was
selected to further remediate the contaminated soil and groundwater. Bioremediation was selected for
this area due to the sensitive habitat and receptor concerns. The bioremediation agent accelerated the
metabolism of the contaminated soil and groundwater.
This project demonstrates GCE’s ability to respond quickly to emergency situations, and to interface with
federal agencies. This project is also an example of GCE’s ability to communicate to concerned residents
important information including the progress of the remediation, and the health and safety of the surrounding
residents and visitors.
