OB/OD RCRA Facility Berm Design - US Army YPG

GCE was subcontracted to design a Berm that would protect critical OB/OD areas from stormwater. The critical OB/OD areas include; three munitions testing pits, a trash pit, and a concrete munitions testing pad. Since there are hazardous materials routinely stored in these areas, allowing stormwater to contact these areas and flow down gradient, would subject the down gradient areas to the unnecessary risk of contamination.

The project included a 100 year flood plain/flood protection analysis. The study included a complete hydraulic analysis of two major washes that would form in the event of a large storm. With a flow in each wash of 5000 cfs, a HEC-RAS model was developed and used to determine the 100 year flood flow water surface elevations for the washes adjacent to the OB/OD site.

The flood plain delineation showed that flood protection was required to prevent flood flows from entering the OB/OD site. GCE subsequently designed a 3’ flood protection berm around the perimeter of the OB/OD site and provided complete construction drawings and specifications. GCE ensured that the berm design would allow for continued maintenance and operation and would withstand the harsh elements.

Once construction of the berms begin, GCE will provide construction inspec-tions, materials testing, and construction staking services. The construction of this project is estimated at $250,000.
