Live Fire Crash Training Pit – US Army YPG
The Live Fire Crash Training Pit was historically used by fire-fighting personnel at Yuma Proving Ground (YPG) to simulate fire scenarios for training purposes. During training exercises, a fuel/water mixture was emptied onto the circular concrete containment area. The liquid was ignited and fire-fighters were tasked with entering the facility and extinguishing the fire. This process was followed for many types of fire training exercises.
A release to the surrounding soils occurred when a fuel line leading to the facility was inadvertently ruptured. GCE was contracted to investigate the release and close the permitted facility. The facility operated under an Aquifer Protection Permit (APP). GCE prepared the topographic survey and sampling plan and developed a Closure Plan for the facility. The Closure Plan was approved by ADEQ without comment.
GCE supervised the removal of the existing concrete pad and sampled the soil above liner for waste characterization and disposal. In accordance with the approved closure plan, GCE inspected the liner for breaches and surveyed and staked all sample and breach points. Samples were collected and analyzed for Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (TPH), Polynuclear Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH), and Benzene, Toluene, Ethylbenzene and Xylene (BTEX). The soil concentrations were below non-residential Soil Remediation Levels for all contaminants of potential concern at the site. As a result, a final closure report was prepared and submitted to ADEQ for the permanent closure of the APP and facility.
